Regimental History of the 37th NCT

 The 37th NCT was organized on November 20,1861, in Raleigh, North Carolina. The regiment was transferred into Confederate service on January 1, 1862. The 37th was brigaded under Brigadier General L. O. Branch until Branch was killed at the battle of Sharpsburg, Maryland on September 17, 1862. Colonel James H. Lane assumed command of the brigade and led it with Bern distinction until the end of the war. The 37th was involved in the following campaigns: New Bern, Hanover Court House, Seven Days Battles, Harper’s  Ferry, Sharpsburg, Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Second Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. 

 At the battle of Spotsylvania Court House, The 37th NCT captured the flags of the 17th Michigan and the 51st Pennsylvania. They also captured an artillery guidon during the same battle. One hundred and eight members of the 37th NCT were paroled at Appomattox Court House in April 1865.
